What Are MOT Advisory Notes?
We look at what advisory notes are, and the impact they have on your MOT test.
Advisory notes are provided as part of an MOT. They give notice of things that will eventually need fixing on your car, but are not reasons to fail a test. Advisory notes are given at the discretion of the tester, and vary in importance dependent upon what they are for.
What You Might See
The advisory notes provided by your MOT tester are things they believe you should pay attention to soon, or within a time frame. This is quite a comprehensive check so don’t be shocked by a long list if one is presented to you. As there are so many things that can be brought up, not all can be mentioned, but they could advise on miles left on tyres and break discs, corrosion, exhaust issues and many more.
You should never ignore them and know that if passed the vehicle will meet minimum requirements for road safety at that point in time. Follow their advice as it keeps you and everyone around you safe. Ignoring them could cause long term damage to the vehicle costing much more to repair, an accident or breakdown.
Talk to us after a test if you have any questions or queries but the tester or mechanic will advise on any notes provided. If after leaving you still have any questions, get in touch.
Common Notes
Tyres are common note to be seen and your mechanic will advise you on the condition of your tyre and may advise replacement after a number of miles have been done based on your day to day use. This could be in a week or a few months time. If they are close to the minimum depth of 1.6 mm they can wear faster and you may be stopped by the police for using illegal tyres. Don’t ignore this and forget about it.
The Importance Of Advisory Notes
The reason for an MOT is safety in the UK, for you, your passengers and the public around you. However, there is no legal requirement to follow them, but to not follow them can have long-term effects if they are not addressed. This can include breaking laws around tyres for example, causing an accident which may go against your insurance policy or be prosecuted for careless driving, failing your next MOT test and causing damage to your vehicle which could be costly.
If at some time you decide to sell your vehicle, the advisory notes may be able to be found as they are recorded with the MOT and may under value the vehicle.
