What Are Run Flat Tyres?
Run flat tyres were designed some time ago now to address the issue when a puncture occurs. It works by strengthening the sidewalls of the tyre so that when a puncture occurs it can support the weight of the car.
It essentially allows the driver to continue till a safer place presents itself for stopping and addressing the issue and repair or replace the tyre.
In a lot of modern cars today have seen manufacturers install systems which monitor the tyre pressure using a socialist valve sensor which is a costly replacement if damaged from a sudden loss of pressure in the tyre.
When this occurs and drops below the specifications of the vehicle, the installed system alerts the driver of the drop in pressure and that there is an issue with the tyre pressure.
With run flat tyres though, you can generally go 50 miles at no more than 50 mph to get to a safe location or garage to replace the damaged tyre.
Can I Fit Normal Tyres To A Car Setup For Run Flat’s?
No, you should not put non-run flat tyres on a car set up for run flat tyres. There are two main reasons for this:
- Because run flat tyres are very hard due to the reinforced sidewall, the suspension on the car is set much softer. If a normal tyre is fitted then it could present safety issues.
- If non-run flat tyres are fitted, the car will be stranded if a puncture does occur.
Can I Fit Run Flat Tyres To A Car Not Set Up For It?
No you should not fit run flat tyres on a car not set up for it.
- The car will not have a tyre pressure monitoring system installed if a puncture occurs and is continued to driven an accident will occur.
- Run flat tyres are much harder and will affect the handling and feel of the car.
