Do I Need To Keep My MOT Certificate?
When you have an MOT test today, there is a copy stored with the DVSA electronically. You may think not having a paper copy means nothing at all, but in a matter of fact it is still very important to have it.
When Do I Need My Paper MOT Certificate?
There are two instances when you need your paper MOT certificate. Firstly when you are selling your car you need to be able to prove that it is road worthy at the time of sale.
Secondly, and most importantly when you have an accident or insurance claim, you must provide your paper MOT certificate. Not having it can affect your claim which could cause for the insurance company to not cover a claim or a significant loss in compensation from and accident or claim.
I Lost My MOT Certificate
Don’t worry, everyone misplaces something sometimes, but don’t worry we can help you out. Two items can be used to get a new paper certificate for your car; Either provide your last MOT test number or bring your V5C certificate down to us and we can print a replacement.
Please note that three may be a charge for doing this.
Can I drive without an up-to-date MOT?
Unfortunately not, if your car is over 3 years old, the law states it must have a valid MOT Test. This has to be done annually, and can be done up to one month before its renewal date. The only time you can drive the vehicle after this date, is to take it to a test centre or an area in which it can be repaired like a garage.
In addition to this you will not be able to renew your road tax which means it can not even be parked on a public road or highway. If you have forgotten your next MOT date, get in touch and we will advise further.
