What is an MOT ?

The MOT (Ministry of Transport)  Test is an annual Check of vehicle safety, road worthiness and exhaust emissions required in Great Britain for most vehicles over three years old and on any public road in the Road Traffic Act 1988. In Northern Ireland the equivalent requirement applies after four years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question?

Do I need to keep my MOT Certificate?

Answer

It is always best to keep your MOT Certificate as Advisories (notes on issues that need attention) that may need to be completed throughout the year or before your next MOT inspection.

Question?

How early can I have my MOT?

Answer

If for example you MOT is due on the 15th May, the earliest you can have this done based on the same date of renewal is the 16th April. You can be fined up to £1,000.00 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.

Question?

What happens after my MOT if I pass?

Answer

Be happy for another year, make sure you check if there is any Advisories before your next MOT or recommendations to watch for throughout the year like tyre usage and tread.

Question?

What happens if my car needs to have a retest on its MOT?

Some of the most common MOT failures are down to small, avoidable factors like tyre pressure, windscreen wipers and light bulbs. By carrying out a few simple checks before you bring your car in, you could save the hassle of a retest.

Question?

What documents are needed for an MOT?

Answer

If you are coming to us for your MOT, you need to bring with you, your vehicles V5C (Vehicle Registration Certificate) and Vehicle Log Bookon its first MOT only.  The only other instance for you to bring the V5C is if you have changed the vehicles Registration Plate number since the last MOT.
